Your First Step: What to Expect When You Come to RiverValley

Taking the first step to seek mental health care takes courage, and knowing what to expect can help ease your concerns. At RiverValley Behavioral Health, we strive to make your first visit as comfortable and welcoming as possible, from scheduling through your initial assessment.

Doctor writes a prescription while holding a medication bottle as a patient rests hands on the desk.

When you call to schedule, our staff will gather basic information and answer your questions. We’ll let you know what to bring, including your insurance card, a list of current medications, and any relevant medical records. You can also complete paperwork ahead of time through our online forms.

Your first appointment begins with an intake assessment. Your clinician will ask about your current concerns, mental health history, medical history, and life circumstances. This helps us understand your unique situation and develop an appropriate treatment plan. You’re encouraged to be open and honest, but you can share at your own pace.

After the assessment, your clinician will discuss initial impressions and recommendations. Together, you’ll set treatment goals and talk about which services might be most helpful. This collaborative approach ensures your plan reflects your priorities.

You may meet with different providers depending on your needs. If medication might be helpful, you’ll see one of our psychiatric providers. If therapy is recommended, you’ll be matched with a therapist whose expertise fits your concerns. Many people benefit from a combination of services.

Throughout your care, we’re committed to treating you with dignity and respect. If you ever have questions or concerns about your treatment, we encourage you to speak up.
