The Phoenix Center: Short-Term Crisis Stabilization
The Phoenix Center provides short-term, residential crisis stabilization for adults experiencing a mental health crisis. Located at the RiverValley Center in Owensboro, this voluntary 8-bed program offers intensive support in a more home-like environment as an alternative to traditional psychiatric hospitalization.

When a mental health crisis requires more support than outpatient services can provide but may not necessitate hospital-level care, The Phoenix Center offers a middle ground. Our residential program provides a safe, structured, and supportive environment where adults can stabilize, receive immediate clinical care, and begin planning their path forward.
The Phoenix Center is a voluntary program, meaning individuals choose to participate. This approach supports engagement and empowerment during a vulnerable time. The 8-bed facility operates 24/7 with trained clinical staff providing continuous supervision and support.
Common reasons for admission include suicidal thoughts or ideation, severe depression or anxiety, psychotic symptoms, substance use crises, and other acute mental health situations that make it unsafe to remain at home. Individuals may be referred through the crisis line, emergency departments, law enforcement, or by contacting our admissions team directly.
Services include psychiatric evaluation, medication management, individual and group counseling, crisis counseling, safety planning, and comprehensive discharge planning. The goal is to achieve stabilization as quickly as possible while ensuring a solid plan for continued care.
Stays are typically brief—usually a few days—focused on achieving the stability needed for a safe return home or transition to the next appropriate level of care. Every individual leaves with a clear aftercare plan that includes follow-up appointments, outpatient referrals, and crisis prevention strategies.
Telehealth medication appointments are available for established patients, making it easier to maintain consistent care.

What to Expect
Admission begins with a comprehensive assessment. During your stay, you’ll participate in individual and group sessions, meet with a psychiatrist, and work with your team to develop a crisis plan and aftercare strategy. The environment is supportive and less restrictive than a hospital setting. You’ll be actively involved in your treatment and discharge planning.
After your evaluation, your provider will discuss treatment recommendations and answer any questions before you make a decision together. Follow-up appointments are typically every 2-4 weeks initially, then less frequently once treatment stabilizes. Between appointments, our team is available for medication-related questions.
