Support from Someone Who Understands

Sometimes the most powerful support comes from someone who truly understands what you’re going through. Peer Support Services at RiverValley Behavioral Health connects you with trained professionals who have navigated their own mental health recovery and use that experience to help others.

Peer Support Specialists have completed specialized training and certification to transform their personal mental health experiences into effective support for people in recovery. They offer something unique—not diagnosis or treatment, but a connection built on genuine understanding and mutual respect.

Peer support is grounded in the belief that recovery is possible for everyone. Your specialist is living proof, offering hope during difficult times. Seeing someone who has faced similar challenges and come through can be incredibly inspiring.

Your peer specialist helps with many aspects of your recovery—sharing coping strategies, helping you navigate the mental health system, supporting you in setting goals, or simply providing a listening ear when you need to talk.

Peer support complements your other treatment. Your specialist works as part of your broader care team, communicating with your therapist, case manager, and other providers. Services are available at our clinic, in the community, and sometimes in your home.

What to Expect

You’ll start by getting to know each other—your specialist will share a bit about their journey and learn about yours. Meetings are typically weekly or bi-weekly at our office or in community settings.

Peer support is different from therapy. Your specialist provides encouragement, practical guidance, and support grounded in their experience and training. The relationship evolves as you grow in your recovery.
