Evidence-Based Medication Support for Recovery

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies for one of the most effective approaches to treating opioid and alcohol use disorders. At RiverValley Behavioral Health, our MAT program addresses both the physical and psychological components of addiction.

Doctor writes a prescription while holding a medication bottle as a patient rests hands on the desk.

MAT medications help reduce cravings, prevent withdrawal symptoms, and block the effects of opioids or alcohol. By addressing the physical aspects of addiction, these medications allow you to focus on the counseling and life changes needed for lasting recovery.

We offer several medication options and work with you to find the best fit. These include buprenorphine (Suboxone), naltrexone (Vivitrol), and other FDA-approved medications for substance use disorders. Your prescriber will explain each option and help you make an informed decision.

Medication alone isn’t enough. Our MAT program integrates medication management with individual and group counseling, peer support, and other recovery services for whole-person care.

Many people worry that MAT simply replaces one substance with another. This is a common misconception. MAT medications are carefully prescribed, monitored by medical professionals, and don’t produce the high associated with drugs of abuse. Research consistently shows MAT helps people achieve and maintain recovery.

MAT can be provided in both residential and outpatient settings. Whether you’re beginning recovery or adding medication support to existing treatment, our team can help you explore your options.

What to Expect

You’ll start with a medical evaluation to determine if MAT is appropriate for your situation. Your provider will discuss medication options, expected benefits, and any potential side effects.

Follow-up appointments monitor your response and adjust treatment as needed. MAT is combined with ongoing counseling to address the behavioral aspects of recovery.
