Michelle P Waiver Case Management

The Michelle P Waiver (MPW) is a Kentucky Medicaid program that provides funding for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities — regardless of age — to stay in their homes with the support services they need. RiverValley’s MPW case managers help families navigate the waiver process and access the full range of community-based services available.

The Michelle P Waiver is part of Kentucky’s 1915(c) Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Medicaid waiver program. It is designed as an alternative to institutional care, allowing individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to receive the supports they need while living at home and participating in their communities. The waiver covers a comprehensive range of services tailored to each participant’s goals and needs.

Services available through the Michelle P Waiver include case management, personal care assistance, respite care for family caregivers, adult day training, behavioral support, community living supports, home modifications for accessibility, and other services designed to promote safety, independence, and quality of life. Participants can choose to receive services through a traditional provider agency or hire their own employees through Kentucky’s Participant Directed Services (PDS) option.

RiverValley’s MPW case managers serve as advocates and guides for individuals and families. They help assess each person’s needs, develop individualized service plans, coordinate the delivery of waiver services, and monitor ongoing progress. For parents of children with IDD, case managers can help identify and access resources and services that come with the waiver, including specialized educational and therapeutic supports.

To qualify for the Michelle P Waiver, individuals must have a documented intellectual or developmental disability, require a level of care that would otherwise be provided in an institutional setting, and meet Medicaid financial eligibility requirements. A psychological evaluation including adaptive behavior assessment is required to verify disability. Our team can help you understand the eligibility criteria and walk you through the application process.

Please note that there is currently a waitlist for the Michelle P Waiver in Kentucky. However, it is possible to receive services on one waiver while waiting for another, and our case managers can help you explore all available options. To apply for Medicaid, visit kynect.ky.gov or contact your local Medicaid office.
