KY-Moms MATR
The KY-Moms Maternal Assistance Toward Recovery (MATR) Program helps expectant mothers across the Commonwealth who are at risk of using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to reduce harm to their children during and after pregnancy. Through intensive prevention education, we support informed decision-making for a healthy baby — because healthy communities start with Mom.

Substance use during pregnancy poses serious risks to both mother and baby. The KY-Moms MATR Program provides a compassionate, non-judgmental space where expectant mothers can learn about those risks and make empowered choices for themselves and their children. This is a prevention-focused program — not treatment — designed to educate and support rather than label or stigmatize.
Through one-on-one education sessions, our trained MATR specialists work with expectant and new mothers on topics including the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs on fetal development, the importance of prenatal care, healthy coping strategies, and connecting to community resources that support a healthy pregnancy.
The program is administered by RiverValley Behavioral Health’s Regional Prevention Center and is available to pregnant and postpartum women in our seven-county service area. MATR specialists can meet with participants in our offices, at partnering healthcare facilities, or in other community settings where mothers feel most comfortable.
KY-Moms MATR is a statewide initiative coordinated by the Kentucky Department for Behavioral Health, Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. RiverValley is proud to serve as the regional provider, ensuring that mothers in the Green River region have access to this important program.
If a participant’s needs go beyond prevention education — for example, if treatment for a substance use disorder is indicated — our MATR specialists can provide warm referrals to RiverValley’s treatment programs, including ROSES For Moms, The Amethyst Center, and outpatient therapy services. We work together to ensure a seamless transition to the right level of care.

What to Expect
KY-Moms MATR is a voluntary program. Participants typically meet with a MATR specialist for a series of one-on-one sessions covering substance use prevention education, prenatal health, and community resource connections. Sessions are scheduled at times and locations that work for you.
There is no cost to participate, and the program is open to all expectant and postpartum mothers in the region — no referral is required. If you’re a healthcare provider, social worker, or community organization, you can also refer clients directly by contacting our Regional Prevention Center.
